The Spirit of Newburyport Gallery has closed its doors at 49 Water Street and has moved on. This web site remains fully functional. The Gallery is currently restructuring its business and exhibit format which will be posted on this web site shortly. The Spirit of Newburyport would like to take this opportunity to thank
all those who supported the early stages of the Gallery's work at 49
water Street. It was this support that has given birth to a whole new
spectrum of creative endeavors. Please see 'Spirit Galleries LLC' for more details.
But before we totally move on, there are some lingering issues that need to addressed, and depending on the level of public or private representation, these issues may be evaluated and addressed further. The following links, including an article by Jim Roy in the latest edition of the 'Newburyport Liberator' have been compiled to best present these issues.
It is the view by the creator of the 'Spirit of Newburyport', that what is happening in the small town of Newburyport, is but a reflection of what is happening throughout the United States. We are losing the unique signatures of small enterprises and small town America that built this country.
If you find that these issues are of any interest to you, please contact either the Liberator or the Spirit of Newburyport for further correspondence.
Thank you.
A special event is now being planned for a 'Spirit of Newburyport' Featured Artist and Open House Exhibit in October. Event details will be posted and announcements made via its mailing list. Please e-mail for invitation requests.
We all look forward to interacting and sharing the latest collections of Spirit Galleries
LLC and look forward to seeing you at the next public event in October!
The following are just a few images of the coming Open House exhibit. Please stay tuned for further details. In the meantime, this web site remains fully functional
regarding all sales inquiries of prints and gift items. Please feel
free to e-mail or call at 978-465-8855 regarding all inquiries. Thank You.
About the 'Spirit of Newburyport' Gallery
The
'Spirit of Newburyport' was originally located at 49 Water Street in a gallery that was attached to an original 1729 'Counting House', just a few blocks from downtown historic
Newburyport, Massachusetts. The Gallery features the exclusive limited edition
Newburyport print collections and gift products of artist/photographer
Jon-William Brown.
Located on the North Shore, Newburyport was first settled in 1635 as part of "Newberry Plantation," now Newbury. It would be set off and incorporated as a town in 1764, and then as a city in 1851. Situated near the mouth of the Merrimack River,
it was once a whaling, shipbuilding and shipping center, with an
industry in silverware manufacture. The seaport declined after
President Thomas Jefferson's Embargo of 1807 and the War of 1812
(although a port for privateering during it), which helped preserve Newburyport's charming early appearance.
The
'Spirit of Newburyport' Gallery collection seeks to capture the essence of this
quaint historic seaport. The synthesis of New England cityscape charm
and contemporary fine art digital applications makes this extensive,
unique collection one of the first of its kind. It is also serving as
the 'experiment' for additional cityscape collections throughout New
England to be incorporated as franchise operations under an umbrella of
'Spirit Galleries LLC' . (More information to follow, in the meantime,
please write jon@spiritofnewburyport.com for additional inquiries)
Originally
from the northshore of Massachuetts, Jon spent the best part of fifteen years developing a certain technique that fused digital photography with painting, digital imaging, and printmaking. His motto is, 'I'm an artist by nature and a photographer by trade''. He produced and worked on several projects incorporating this technique before moving to
Newburyport in April of 2002. He then spent three years applying the technique to his
first extensive cityscape editions which became the Spirit of Newburyport' print collection in which he debuted at local art
shows during the summer of 2005. He then had his first gallery showing
at 'Off The Wall' in October followed by an appearance at the
Newburyport Harvest Festival. He did several more shows during the
holidays including a local city tour in the winter of 2006, and
a presentation at the Newburyport Library entitled 'Newburyport; An American Perspective"
on creative sustainable communities featuring 'Market Square
Transformation', a co-creative project with local teacher historian
Theodore Kyrios.
The Spirit of Newburyport Gallery opened its first signature gallery on
April 29, 2006 at 49 water Street during Newburyport's first ArtWalk of the season. In August, Mayor John Moak purchased one of Jon's designs, 'Market Square Summer', to present to Senator Ted Kennedy at the Yankee Homecoming presentation as a 'gift' from the city. In June of 2007, Jon was commissioned by the Essex Street Inn for the decor of its new ten room inn and business conference room addition. The Inn also uses Jon's depiction of the Essex Street Inn on its own web site. In September, Jon was commissioned by the director of the Malden YMCA for a rendition of its brand new multi-million dollar facility.
Jon has been a volunteer coordinator and a driving force behind the Newburyport Artwalk and now produces its web site at www.newburyportartwalk.com. He continues to work in community organization projects with proposals for an ArtWalk Affiliate and Sponsorship program and his vision for the 'Cushing Wharf Village Marina' as part of the new Newburyport waterfront development. His collaborative piece with retired Newburyport history teacher Ted Kyrios, 'Market Square Transformation', was recently donated to the 'Newburyport Preservation Trust' and used for raising funds for its organized preservation efforts.
The Spirit of Newburyport Gallery celebrated its second anniversary this past April and ended its exhibitions at 49 Water Street on June 28th, 2008 with an Open House
once again during Newburyport's scheduled summer ArtWalk.
The Newburyport collection, along with other citiscape renditions, continue to expand while under the proposed franchised operation and umbrella corporation of Spirit Galleries LLC. The Gallery is currently going through a period of re-structuring while plans for its next public exhibition are finalized. Please stay tuned for further postings regarding this event and developing business plan.
